[rtg] 0.74 vs. 0.81

Bill Fumerola's yrtg patch piqued my interest and so I started digging
around in the CVS. This brought me a few questions...

1. Can anyone give me comparisons between RTG's 'stable' release and the
'development' branch - beyond what is in the changelog? Would one version be
faster, more reliable, easier to work with, easier to patch and update,
etc.. than the other?

2. It looks like some of the patches floating around could be *quite*
useful. Would anybody be interested in having some sort of repository for
these patches - with basic documentation and such. It would be great to make
it part of http://rtg-utilities.sourceforge.net

Also, as a marginally-related question - I've never used CVS - To try out
the yrtg patch I checked out RTG using the following command:

  cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous at rtg.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/rtg co -D
2004/11/03 -P rtg

That got me a source tree that patched cleanly - but compiling just barfs. I
RTFM, but should have checked out the code in a different way? (I understand
that it may be impossible to get it working though)
