I hate the idea of forking any project (including the one I'm heavily
involved in) but here seems a prime case where the user contribution
outstripped the active developer time.

Well, if people want it included, I'd like to hope that they'll submit
patches for the bits that are relevant to them.

Various people have indicated they've extended various bits of RTG
into interesting directions. I'm hoping that a few of them will step up
and work at merging their changes into the SVN trunk so everyone can
benefit. 

I'd like to then hope that an improved, stable tree can be handed back
to the current project maintainers to include in the official offering.

If not, then well, I guess the users have spoken. I'm just acting
as a gatekeeper/housekeeper here. :)
