I have a cron job that restarts rtg when its using >5% of system memory.

We wrote our own management system for all our devices (Cisco, Juniper,
Nortel...). It knows how to snmp walk the devices and checks for new
interfaces. I create rtg (and nagios) config files from this system
dynamically.

We use rtg graphs to eye ball customer usage and advise them what to
buy, that's all. My concern is it's getting harder and harder to compile
rtg. Back when we had 32 bit OS's it was easy. Now with 64bit OS and 64
bit Mysql libraries.... its a pain to compile rtg. Without some
upgrades, rtg will eventually fall to far behind. I'm going to look at
Cati this summer. It has a poller I hear that's based on the rtg poller.
We may leave rtg behind in the next year or so.
